MUSKOGEE, Okla. — The Cherokee Nation recently contributed $5,000 to the Murrow Indian Children’s Home in Muskogee, a non-profit organizationproviding residential and crisis care as well as daycare for children of teen mothers from tribes across Oklahoma. The home operates in partnership with National Ministries and is supported in part by the American Baptist Association.

“The Murrow Indian Children’s Home has many missions and one of those is to provide a home to Native American children who do not have a place to live,” said Chad Smith, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. “This contribution was made because we support their efforts.
Betty Martin, executive director of the Murrow Home, said the home provides more than just a bed and a meal for the children in its care. Martin said with today's complex society, having a family unit is critical in providing a child with necessary learning experiences upon which the rest of his or her life depends. The Murrow Home’s family unit provides children from broken homes and dysfunctional families a chance to experience a new way of living with others.
“With the current state of the economy, Murrow continues to see fewer contributions and the cost of living is not going down,” said Martin. “We are very grateful for the generous contribution from the Cherokee Nation and we plan to use the funding to provide for the children who are currently living at Murrow.”
