Tribal Work Experience Program

The Tribal Work Experience Program is an extension of the General Assistance program designed to provide the unemployed/employable head of household with work experience and training opportunities to aid in promoting self-respect and self-sufficiency. This will enable participants to compete more effectively in today's job market and also enhance their self-confidence. The ultimate goal in TWEP is to provide the participant with permanent unsubsidized employment. Participants must be certified eligible for General Assistance by the Social Worker and receive recommendation by the Social Service Review Committee for possible placement to a non-profit organization in the Tribal Work Experience Program.

The participants on the program are paid according to the Oklahoma State Welfare Standards, which is also the basis used by the Family Assistance program in making their determination of the grant that the participant will receive. Depending upon the work record demonstrated by the participant, he may also be granted a $55.00 a month incentive.

The Tribal Work Experience Program is meeting a definite need within the Cherokee Nation. TWEP affords the General Assistance recipient an opportunity to maintain their self-respect by working for their grant rather than being the recipient of a welfare check. At the same time, they prove to their prospective employers their ability to successfully carry out their assignments.

Referral Services

The Family Advocates often refer families to other resources in their area for which they may be eligible. They may call the other agency and set up an appointment for the client or they may send a referral form with them to the other agency. The Family Advocate in each area maintains and updates a resource booklist of resources available. Referral services are used quite often, but especially in instances where clients are ineligible for services from Family Assistance.
